Chlopski Garnek (Village Style One-pot)


Sometimes very simple dishes based on ‘boring’ ingredients can turn into an amazing, romantic dinner. Four of the most common, cheap Polish ingredients - sausages, potatoes, cabbage and onion - starring in one pot, will give a great dinner performance, especially beloved by busy housewives and hungry men. So if you want to surprise your guests with a great traditional Polish dinner and not spend too much money or time on it, choose ‘Chlopski Garnek’!

Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 25 minutes
Serves: 4

Ingredients:
2 long sausages, or 6 medium/small size (ask in Polish delicatessen for: Village, Traditional or Torunska sausages)
1 onion
6 medium size potatoes
Half of green cabbage
2 red peppers
1 teaspoon spicy pepper powder
1 tablespoon dry parsley or fresh parsley
2 garlic cloves
1 teaspoon cumin
2 bay leaves
3 grains of allspice
1 tablespoon marjoram
1 tablespoon thyme
Salt and black pepper
400 ml chicken or vegetable stock
Optional: mushrooms

Method:
1.     Chop sausages into half-moon shaped slices. Chop peeled and washed potatoes and red pepper. Shred cabbage and slice onion.


2.     Pre-heat oil in a deep frying pan or a pot. Fry lightly onion slices and then add sausages. Fry them for a little bit. Add red pepper and fry together on a lower heat for 5 minutes.


3.     Add shredded cabbage and potatoes. Mix them all together.
4.     Pour chicken or vegetable stock into the pot and add all the herbs and spices (apart from salt and pepper).
5.     Simmer all the ingredients in the pot on a low heat for about 20-25 minutes (until potatoes are tender). Stir them occasionally.


6.     Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
7.     Serve on deep plates, with bread and butter.
